Ciao. I do not fully agree with Wendy since there might be a (rough and partially reliable...) way to figure out the origin of these surnames. Follow this link http://gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/ write the surname whose origin you're after below "Cognome" and press the red arrow.
You'll see (for example) that by far most Gado's come from Piemonte (north-west Italy) while Salvio's originates in the Naples area (Campania, south Italy). This could be a good start...

Sorry, it does not work like that. You can't assume that all Salvios come from the same town in Italy, the same is true for the other names.
What does work, is knowing the exact name of your own ancestor, and finding records about him/her.. such as when they were born, and when they immigrated. For some, you may even find the name of the ship that they came on.
You do have to have specific persons.. not surnames.
