I can only help you with Atonement, I haven't seen Sweeney Todd.
Briony Tallis is a thirteen year old and she lives in a rich household. She has an older sister named Cecilia. Cecilia and their housekeeper's son, Robbie, are both home from college for the summer. Cecilia and Briony also have a brother named Leon, who comes home from college with his friend Paul.

Things are tense between Cecilia and Robbie, because they don't want to admit they have feelings for each other. Robbie makes several attempts to write a letter to Cecilia, including one that graphically describes a sexual act he wishes to perform on her. He also writes a more heartfelt letter, which he intends to deliver.

He goes to the Tallis' household for dinner, and on the way he gives Briony the letter to deliver. He realizes too late that he has given her to wrong letter, and he arrives to find that both Briony and Cecila have read it. Briony is shocked and thinks that Robbie is a sex maniac. Cecilia leads Robbie to the library, where she confesses her love for him, and they begin to have sex. They are interrupted by Briony. Then at dinner, they discover that Briony's twins cousins have disappeared. While everyone is looking for them, Briony finds her other cousin Lola being raped by someone. Briony insists that Robbie is the culprit, and uses the letter he wrote to Cecilia as evidence. Robbie is convicted, even though he did not commit the crime.

Several years later, Robbie is serving as a soldier, about to be sent home. Several weeks earlier, before he left London, he saw Cecilia again. She remained true to him for four years and begs him to come back to her. She reveals that she has broken contact with her family over her love for Robbie and she gives him a photograph of a seaside cottage that they can retire to. Cecilia is a nurse in Lonon. She learns that Briony, now 18 is training to be a nurse herself. Briony knows that Robbie did not rape Lola, that it was Paul -- to whom Lola is now engaged. Briony goes to see Cecilia to admit her guilt and state her willingness to do whatever it takes to atone for her sins and clear Robbie's name. Robbie is in Cecilia's apartment when she gets there. Although they are angry with her, they tell her what she needs to do to make things right. She agrees, then leaves as Cecilia and Robbie are intimate for one last time before he is shipped to France.

At the end of the movie, it is present day and Briony is discussing her final book, Atonement. We find out she actually never went to see Cecilia and Robbie to admit she was wrong. Robbie died before being sent home, and Cecilia was killed in a bombing several moths later. In Briony's novel, Cecilia and Robbie marry and live in the cottage they had planned on living in. Briony wrote the book to atone for her sins and give them the time together that they deserved, but never got.

I'm sorry that my summary is so confusing in the second half. The secon half of the movie jumps around a lot, and you need to watch it a few times to fully understand. The movie was absolutely beautiful, very picturesque, and the acting was great. I would really recommend it. Sad ending though, so watch out!

Sweeney Todd is the story of a man who had the perfect family. A judge became obsessed with his wife, sent him to prison, raped her and locked his daughter in his house. His wife poisoned herself. Sweeney returns after several years with the help of a young sailor who later falls for his daughter when he sees her in her window. Sweeney finds a woman(Mrs. Lovett) has set up a pie shop in his old home/barber shop. He uses her as a confidant, and restarts his business as a ruse for getting the Judge to come so he can be murdered. Sweeney's first kill is a rival barber who once worked for him, but remembered who he was. Immediately after, Sweeney attempts to kill the judge but is unsuccessful. He then is so frustrated that he begins killing multiple men. Mrs. Lovett, victim of a recent meat shortage, starts using the meat for her pies. A little boy who used to work for the rival barber comes and works for her. Eventually, Johanna(Sweeney's daughter) is sent to an insane asylum and the Sailor comes to break her out. During this time, Sweeney finally kills the barber and his henchman. Lovett and he soon learn that the little boy has suspicions about what is going on with the meat. They follow him down to the oven room to kill him. However, an old, insane woman has followed them down there. Sweeney kills her, not realizing that she was, in fact, his wife who had gone insane from the poison. Realizing that Mrs. Lovett lied to him about her death, Sweeney shoves her into the oven. The little boy, outraged that he would kill the one person who had ever been nice to him, slits Sweeney's throat.
This musical is absolutely fabulous. The acting and singing was extremely wonderful, especially since most of the cast were not trained singers. The plot is highly interesting, and the backgrounds and costumes are perfect. I highly reccommend it.
