It isn't dumb because MANY people who are new to research, think of family as "everyone with the same name is related, if you go back far enough", and come from "one" ancestor in common. Common thought until you get into research, and find that neither statement is totally accurate, in terms of genealogy.
The basic standard of genealogy is to find provable records of who YOUR KNOWN ancestors are. For example.. your known ancestor could be Michael Sullivan, born in 1825, whose parents were John Sullivan and Bridget Briody. Yes.. I DO know.. it is tough, you are not sure where to look. One approach can be finding Michael has a brother in the US, and by researching HIM, HIS immigration record exists, and states he lived in Dublin. Or, you find ten different couples in records of John and Bridget Sullivan.. and you have to go through process of elimination.
All I am trying to explain.. is that the original idea of where all Sullivans came from, isn't always going to be valid. Sorry.
btw.. Pat has a computer in front of her.. and she doesn't seem to get the idea that yahoo answers is for the whole purpose of getting answers from other persons. If we all had to just google it, yahoo answers would cease to exist.

You have a world of knowledge right in front of you!!!! The key word is computer!!!!!

I agree with Patricia M. Do a search on Sullivan and Briody. The Internet has made searching for your ancestors much easier. Try it...you will be surprised.

Have a look at this web site its an Irish genealogy directory,
http://rmhh.co.uk/ireland.html
the first site in the directory is called Irish origins. The following information came from www.ancestry.com
Sullivan Name Meaning and History
Irish: reduced form of O’Sullivan, an Anglicized form of Gaelic ó Súileabháin ‘descendant of Súileabhán’, a personal name composed of the elements súil ‘eye’ + dubh ‘black’, ‘dark’ + the diminutive suffix -án.
Briody Name Meaning and History
Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic ó Bruaideadha ‘descendant of Bruaided’, an old Irish personal name.
Hope this helps.

Really interesting question and answers.

My grandfather's surname was Gibson and he was from County Clare. He married a Cornish girl, maiden name Cox. One day I will do some research - but what a powerful Celtic mixture resulted from their marriage! No wonder I am so moody, sometimes fiery, sometimes depressive!

Good hunting!
