Can't help you on the Cardiff bit, but, if they had a less than common surname, how about doing a GRO search to see if any of them married? Happily records from about 1986 are on a database so fully searchable on sites such as ancestry or findmypast. If you find an entry that looks likely, you can contact the registrar for the district and ask them to verify the details that you have, like their age and their father's name, profession to double check, then you could get the certificate which will contain their address at the time.

Another idea might be to put yourself on some of the social networking and missing you type sites mentioning that you are hoping to make contact. Or contact the school who might have an old pupil's association or an address and might be willing to forward a letter on your behalf

I am from cardiff and my mum went 2 that school! lol have u checked friendsreuinted or genesrenuited?? i have been using them to find my brothers and sisters! lol x

Yeah, was the 80's she was in the school, will ring her later and ask her - also check www.findmypast.com, x

meet up in the center by argos, i will be there on friday at 5pm

You could try www.192.com although you do have to pay to use it.

Ok. Stock answer to this question which simply put is that there are only two ways to try and find living people in the UK. At least two ways that I know of. Frankly I'm a genealogist and am much more interested in the deceased than the living, and working in the distant past doesn't bring up all kinds of problems like the Data Protection Act. Finding information out about the living can be difficult, if not impossible.

The first obvious thing is to try and find a telephone number. Log on to BT.com and see if they are listed in the phone book. Potential problems obviously are if they don't have a landline, are ex-directory, or have such a common combination of first name and last name that there are dozens if not hundreds of hits. You have to bear in mind also that families are nearly not as territorial as they once were and can now be spread far and wide. There is no guarantee that they are still living in Cardiff, Wales or anywhere else in the UK. The other possibility is logging on to www.192.com and paying for some credits to view the electoral roll. This might be more useful if they are all still living as one family unit. Again, if all you have is a first name and a last name (a middle name REALLY helps), you could find dozens or hundreds of hits, and once again, who's to say they are still in Cardiff? The more serious problem is that the online electoral roll is not as complete as the websites that sell access to it would have you believe. There are two rolls - the "commercial" roll (which is used by marketing companies for junk mail purposes) and the official roll, which is held at the local town hall. Because of the junk mail thing, people now have the opportunity to "opt out" every year when they send in their household form, whcih means that there is no guarantee this method will succeed either.

More obvious solutions you've probably tried - genesreunited, friendsreunited or missing-you.net. It is sometimes even worth trying to find a myspace or facebook page, assuming they are online and use their real name somewhere.

If you're convinced they are still in Cardiff, then writing to the local newspaper is a sensible option and seeing if any readers recognise the names of which you speak. You may find a former neighbour or schoolfriend who knows where they moved to.

The last-ditch resort of the desperate is probably the Salvation Army. They have a very good record in the family tracing department. Give them a google.
