If its genealogy you can try Free BMD, or Family Search. Org, if its recent then can't help

Canadian Genealogy offer lookups for nothing.

I have located 5 and 7 generations of my family for free.

The people in this group are amazing as is this group. My father's genealogy was completed in a couple of weeks.

You will have lots of success in this group, I am sure.

You don't get anything for nothing I'm afraid. The reason these sites charge money is because they have put a great deal of time and money into gathering the resources and transcribing them.

I have spent literally thousands of pounds researching my family tree. You would expect to pay to enjoy most hobbies so why not genealogy?

If you really want to do it properly you need to commit time, energy and, yes, money. If not I'd give up now because you won't get very far.

That said, if you're uk based try;

www.freebmd.org for 1837 - 1920 Births, marriages and deaths or

www.freecen.org for censuses (not fully transcribed).

A complete copy of the 1881 and parish records to about 1880 are available on www.familysearch.org.

Good luck!

You can search other people's family trees on these sites to try and establish a connection:

Genesreunited and Ancestry require you to join up, but you only have to pay to make contact with another user. Tribalpages and Roostweb are completely free and you don't have to register
