Position:Home>Genealogy> Obtaining Vital Records...?

Question:During a recent conversation with my boyfriend, I learned that he doesn't know much about his mother's side of the family. He was her 5th child, and lived with her and the other children for awhile, but went to live with his father when he was about 10 or 11. Shortly after, the mother died, and he's lost contact with that side of the family. He does not know her maiden name, just her first name, and her married name. I told him to look on his birth certificate, but he has never had a copy of that. His mother had the original when she died. He tried calling the county records office where he was born, but they have no record of his birth. We learned that they moved from that location to another after his birth, so we're not sure if that has something to do with the loss of the record or not. I also suggested him getting a marriage certificate from his parent's marriage. The father has now passed, and he doesn't know what county they were married. How would he go about finding this out?

Search for his father and by his fathers name should be a record of his mother's marriage to him and all of the over 18 children. Find her last name that way or pay the money for a complete record search.

Someone has to have a copy of his birth certificate. Once he locates that, his mother's maiden name and father's name along with what city they resided in when he was born. Check the courthouse in the city your boyfriend's parents lived for a marriage license. It's really a domino effect. Take your time and figure out what the first thing you need would be and where could you find it. I think it's easiest to find the birth certificate. There should be an Office of Vital Records somewhere in your state. Good Luck!

Since he has Siblings then ask them to see their birth certificate or ask them if they possibly know where he was born. They may have been born in the same town. That way you find the maiden name of his mother.
