The problem is that her last name is not English, but this does not mean her mother or a grand parent wasn't. The Welsh are dark haired and dark skinned (Shirley Bassey, Catherine Zeta Jones). There was a deep rooted Romany heritage in the UK which also tends to have this dark appearance. Crooked, protruding front teeth are also common among some Romanies.
These are the Schamps shown on Free BMD as born in the UK:

Births Sep 1888 SCHAMP Nellie Wandsworth 1d701

Births Dec 1889 (>99%)
Schamp Eleanor Amelia Poplar 1c611

Births Mar 1891 (>99%)
SCHAMP Cecilia Elizabeth Poplar 1c674

Births Sep 1892 (>99%)
Schamp Rose Esther Poplar 1c599

Births Dec 1894 (>99%)
Schamp Celia Elizabeth Poplar 1c646

Births Mar 1897 (>99%)
Schamp Lilian Florence Poplar 1c659

Births Sep 1898 (>99%)
SCHAMP George Henry Mile End 1c441

Births Mar 1899 (>99%)
Schamp William Walter Poplar 1c650

Births Sep 1898 (>99%)
SCHAMP George Henry Mile End 1c441

Births Mar 1912
Schamp Alfred W Schamp W.Ham 4a423

Births Mar 1900 (>99%)
Schamp Mary Ann Poplar 1c713

Births Jun 1903 (>99%)
Schamp Rose Amelia Poplar 1c660

Births Dec 1904 (>99%)
Schamp Emily Elizabeth Poplar 1c601

Births Jun 1910 (>99%)
SCHAMP Minnie Violet Poplar 1c536

Births Dec 1919 (>99%)
Schamp Winifred A M Tucker W.Ham 4a447

These are nearly all in the EastEnd of London, where there were a lot of Jewish immigrants in the 19th century.
The references (4a 447 etc.) can be used to order a birth certificate by post from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/order_...

I also looked on Ancestry.co.uk for you and there are only about 15 SCHAMP births shown in total and these are in Poplar, Mile End, West Ham - all East London, and one in Wandsworth, West London, as above.
Winifred was a Schamp by birth and married a TUCKER
There are also two women shown who are married but have mothers named Schamp. These have the surnames FINCH and STEPHENSON

Its worth noting that the 1871 UK Census shows only ONE Schamp!!! Emiel Schamp from Nassan GErmany, so you could be his descendant!
There are also other Schamps shown in 1891 who had recently arrived from Germany - i.e they are not shown on the 1881 census. If you want more info email me with details.

Hope this helps

She sounds like a Gypsy to me, which would be wonderful, The UK has always taken in various people from around the world, Many many Eastern Europeans have come here over the years,

Good look and good hunting

If you could post more info, like her first name, who she married, when she lived (was born / died) that would be most helpful in one of the UK researchers finding her and maybe provide you with more info. You cannot do genealogy based on a last name. There are a number of reasons why people end up with the last name they have and it may have nothing to do with the origins of the name itself. Tracing name origins is not the right way to do genealogy.

However, if you insist on doing it that way, whether it is right or wrong, the name Schamp has German and Dutch origins.

The best way I know for you to learn about your roots is to:

Build your family tree on line.
You can use a paid site like:
http://www.ancestry.com/

OR You can do this for free on:

http://www.tribalpages.com/

Start with yourself, and then attach living family members.
Find out all you can about you family from living members, then attach it to your tree.
Now it is time to look for historical records and attach the info to your tree:

It is ALL about census records, and other historical records!

You might get lucky and others may have done some work on your family tree. Google family members names i.e. "Mary Smith" + "family tree"

The time may come when you want more information than you can find for free. When this happens you can back up your "tribalpage" tree to your computer on a "GEDCOM" file
you can then go to (I think it is the best subscription site)

http://www.ancestry.com/

Upload your "GEDCOM" file
and start to work!
You might need to make a few adjustments to your tree to make it look better.
