You could look up people at the Social Security Death records. It's limited to people who have had social security numbers. You need to enter the name and at least one other piece of information about the person if you have a common name you're looking for. It will give you birth date, death date, ssn, and last residence for the person. You'll be able to write the SS Administration for a copy of the SSN application which would have further information if you need it. I think that service costs around $7.
