It is Greek in origin, and means "crown," "garland" or "wreath." There were many prominent people with the name Stephen. There was St. Stephen, a Greek Jew named in the New Testament, who was stoned to death. There was Stephanus, of the ancient Greek city-state Alexandria, who was a Christian philosopher in Constantinian Rome. There was also a sculptor named Stephanus, who lived in the First Century AD, though I doubt he had much influence in children being named Stephen for generations.

Stephen
Usual English spelling of the name of the first Christian martyr (Acts 6–7), whose feast is accordingly celebrated next after Christ's own (26 December). His name is derived from the Greek word stephanos garland, crown. Variants: Steven, Stephan.

Steven: Scottish, English, Dutch, and North German: from the personal name Steven, a vernacular form of Latin Stephanus, Greek Stephanos ‘crown’. This was a popular name throughout Christendom in the Middle Ages, having been borne by the first Christian martyr, stoned to death at Jerusalem three years after the death of Christ. In English the variant spelling Stephen is almost equally common.
