Position:Home>Genealogy> I dont undestand family records? it says the name then has a number??

Question:I found a free website that has free family records, my great grandfathers name was william henry hale, I looked on this site and images came up of the record.

It had a million names I scrolled through and found my great grandfathers name, but all it had was his name and a number like 7b 1196, thats it? I dont get it because I know his name so why would I wanna see a page with his name??? does the number mean something, am I meant to put it in somewhere??

What you're looking at is the GROs INDEX of records which is just a long list of all the names that were registered and when. That's all it is, a finding aid to order the real certificate from the source. Once you have that information, you go along to the website of the General Register Office (www.gro.gov.uk) and use those details - the registration district, the volume and page number to order a copy of the certificate itself.

This is why I always tell people that there is never a truly free way to do your family tree, and that at some point, you need to spend money to buy a certificate (£7 each). Congratulations, you've reached that point. If you want to get any further with your research, you'll need that certificate. If you order it now (Mon) you might get it by Saturday.

It's a reference to his birth certificate. You can order his birth certificate from the public records office for £7.

You can order birth marriage and death certificates at this website
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certif...
It asks you if you know the reference, and you type it in as well as the district name eg. Leeds, Manchester etc.

It`s the NRO(National Records Office ) reference. They are located in Southport and you can quote that number and obtain a copy of the certificate for £7.
They have a website and you can do it online.

Its the GRO numbers, these are the volume and page numbers, they're only relevant when purchasing a certificate from the GRO ( general register office.) you quote these numbers when ordering a certificate on line. They aren't needed if you order the certificate from the Register office where the life event was registered.
Hope this helps.

The records you have found are the index's of Birth Death and Marriage, The number you found works like this.7b is the Volume number and 1196 is the page you need this reference along with The year and Quarter, you can then obtain the relative certificate.

Hope this helps
