I need a free web site if there is one that can track down family heritage...do

Question:My grand father's parents or their parents came from Germany and we have a super small family and the last name stops unless my brother has a son. I heard not sure if it's true that our name was shortened when they came to america. I would like to learn some of my family history if you know of any good sites to help aid in my discoveries Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest you start at: www.familysearch.org They have a large data base and is free. You should also look at: www.cyndislist.com/ that website has a huge list of genealogy sites. Note however, many of them are not free. You can also try your local library. Many times the genealogy room will have subscriptions to the popular sites. I've found ancestry.com to be really good but most of my searches have been US based. A final note, beware of "free searches" what they don't tell you is the results are not free.
