Would like to know the original Last Name for Joseph Dorin?

Question:Would like to know the original Last Name for Joseph Dorin. I know original last name has its origin from Lithuania. Joseph moved to this country in the early 1900's. Possibly was in Pennsylvania for a while before moving to Chicago. Changed the name in order to get work. If you do not have the ability to look this up, if you know of a good source to use to find this information, that would be great to.

I keep adding to this answer -- hope it's not too confusing!

After putting all the info together (see below), I found Joseph Dorin (born in 1895) in the 1900 US Census. He was born in Pennsylvania. BUT there's another Joseph Dorin, born Sept. 1860, born in Russia, immigration year 1896, who is likely to be a relative since they're living in the same household (George Dorin's household.)

I found the following obit (for the younger Joseph,) published in the Chicago Tribune 4/24/1977

I found that Joseph G. Dorin died two years later; his wife was Patricia, nee Rakowski, sons Joseph and Christopher.

I found Peter's obit which lists his parents (and thus Joseph's and Anna's parents) as Helen and George Dorin.

I also found Kathlyn's father's obit with wife's name and children's names...as well as Anna Dorin's obit with son and daughter-in-law listed.

Joan Dorin's and Warren Larsen's wedding announcement, with a photo of her.

An article on Anna Dorin copying the secret plans of American Liberty Motors. In that her brother Joseph is said to be an army clerk at Camp Fort Wayne, and Peter an expert machinist. They are all called "Bohemians."

The most useful tool on average is the US census, which is open up to 1930, for research. In 1910, I find a Joseph Dorin in Phila. with his parents, Stanislas and Louisa. This Joseph was age 23, his next younger brother was 21.. based on place of birth, the family moved between the two siblings. There are other Joseph Dorins... this may or may not be your man. The birth place is German Poland, which DURING THE 1800s, has to be taken with some flexibility.. borders changed constantly.
You know he went to Chicago.. what is needed is verification on birth/death date to connect him to the census. Then, if it shows being naturalized, you can go for that file. It will hopefully also give a clear date of immigration so you can search Ellis Island, although NOT all immigrants came through there.

I would say that the one found by Jan below, who is born ca 1895, is probably your ancestor... meaning, he was NOT age 23 in 1910 (I have the wrong man). I would also think that the one who immigrated ca 1937 is ALSO the wrong man. Sometimes it is a process of elimination.
