Origin Displayed: Scottish. First found in Angus, where Gilbert, son of Gillebride, 1st Earl of Angus , obtained a charter of the lands of Purin, Ogguluin and Kynmethan, in Angus between 1172 and 1177.

I somehow doubt it. This surname distribution map for 1998(click below) shows most of Scotland being blank. The name appears to be most popular in and around Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. (don't forget to look at the 1881 map as well, which is even more clear). I'd say therefore that the name is more likely to be English. That's not to say there aren't Scottish people with this name, just not that many.
