I have to say I really don't rate your chances. Liverpool has a large Irish population and I would have thought that Donnally or any near variant is quite a common name, and whichever of the spellings is correct, you're really going to have an uphill battle to find anything out in genealogical terms. We're talking fifty years ago now. The only half-sane recommendation I can suggest is to send a letter to "The Sun" newspaper (who have a special 'looking for' page on their letters page) or a letters page at a local paper such as the Liverpool Echo or Derby Evening Telegraph where you think they might live. Explain exactly what you know and don't know and appeal for any information on the family - try not to give too much information out though, there are identity thieves about. If you're really lucky you might happen across them, a relative, a former neighbour, friend or work colleague who can help.

I can't help but feel that a search of the electoral roll or trying to find a death certificate would just be a waste of time, especially if you're not clear on the spelling. And as itsjustme says, an approximate age and indication of whether that is a married or maiden name would be really helpful. Without that at least, we can't even begin to try and search.

Try RootsWeb on the net. It's a free search engine put out by Ancestry.com. There are thousands of people on chat boards there; my husband, who was adopted and knew only his birth mother's name, found HIS family on it!! Best of luck!
