Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: One set of great grandparents of one are the same as the great, great grandparents of the other. What do you call this and is it a very close relationship genetically?

Second cousins once removed.

Suppose "Johnny's" great grandparents are the same as the great, great grandparents of someone named, oh, "MJ".

One of MJ's parents is a second cousin to Johnny. MJ being one generation down on the family tree from her parents, she is a second cousin once removed to Johnny.

It isn't close enough to worry about if you two want to date, unless hemophilia or Huntington's Chorea or something else genetic runs in your family.

You should be cautious for social reasons. If you DO date and he proves to be a cad, there will be some distinct pauses at the family reunions. He walks in, you remember that he spent the night trying to get your bra off, and all of a sudden he has a bowl of potato salad on his head and you are in tears.

If you had ancestors in the USA (or many other countries) before 1880, there is an excellent chance one of them married a first cousin and even more married second cousins or cousins once removed. There is a line in the movie "Gone With the Wind" about some family or another always marries their cousins. It happened. Nobody had three-headed children.

second cousins

im pretty sure that would be a 2nd cousin, maybe 3rd, and yea i think its close i keep in contact with most of my cousins

Second couson once removed.

Genetically, fairly distant. Statistically they'd they'd have 1/64 of their DNA in common.

second cousins

Cousin (aka "first cousin")
Your first cousins are the people in your family who have two of the same grandparents as you. In other words, they are the children of your aunts and uncles.

Second Cousin
Your second cousins are the people in your family who have the same great-grandparents as you, but not the same grandparents.

Third, Fourth, and Fifth Cousins
Your third cousins have the same great-great-grandparents, fourth cousins have the same great-great-great-grandparents, and so on.

Removed
When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations. You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your grandparents), so the word "removed" is not used to describe your relationship.

The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation. For example, your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This one-generation difference equals "once removed."

Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.

You can search on Google for "Kinship Chart" if you don't understand.
