I had problems trying to find a birth certificate for someone born in 1885, I live in Nottinghamshire and I knew that my gr/gr/ gran had been born in Stapleford Notts, when I asked at the register office in Ilkeston why it was marked as being in Notts, Derbys and Leics, I was told it was because it was close to the boundary. The cities closest were given as well for accuracy?.
Have a look at the link posted below, it's an index of all the place names in England prior to the boundary changes of 1939,

I live just 9 miles away from Ilkeston, my address is Nottinghamshire.
If you need any help finding the information, you could post the persons name and I know for certain one of the excellent researchers that we have in the UK, will help you or will actually find the information for you.
You would need the name, rough idea of the year of birth and a location.
Hope this helps.

It could very well be Ilkley.

I would think it could still be Ilkeston. Boundaries change over time and the Yorkshire/Derbyshire was no exception. I've been researching my family history for over 15 years and it's a nightmare when the same placename crops up in 3 different counties. Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire are the worst in my experience. I live in Yorkshire and am pretty familiar with the surrounding geography and there's only one Ilkeston I know of and that's in what we know today as Derbyshire.

At the risk of telling you something you probably already know, remember spellings can change too. Ilkeston might have had an 'e' on the end of it for example or two 'l's - Illkestone - lots of likely possiblities. Not sure if you're using a genealogy site for your research but Ancestry.com has a very good search engine for records, and usually considers alternative spellings.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
