This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name,
Bellard
English: unexplained. In the British Isles the name is now found chiefly in Lancashire.
French: dissimilated form of BĂ©rard (see Berard).
hope this helps.

It is found in both countries apparently!

There is no such thing as a family coat of arms.

Different Bellards have different histories. One used to dance on a table top with a rose between her teeth in a sailor's cantina, when I was a young man working my way around the world on a three-masted ketch.

If you don't reserch it, you'll never know.

If your aunt is a slender red-head with a small scar on her ankle, I can help you a bit.

the real question (since names do not originate in only one place, contrary to popular opinion).. is not where the surname comes from. The question is where YOUR ancestors came from.
There is no one central "ancestor" that every Bellard descends from. Be careful.. there are merchants out there who will tell you differently, and golly gee.. they stand to profit from you believing what they tell you.
Read their fine print; hold onto your money; then start finding the records that pertain to your actual ancestors.
