There are two Archie Tolberts in the 1900 US Census who MIGHT be candidates. (I checked your other question to get Gladys' birthdate and used that to estimate how old Archie might be.)

There's also in the World War I Draft Registration Cards:

Name: Parker Archibald Tolbert
City: Not Stated
County: Belmont
State: Ohio
Birth Date: 18 Aug 1876
Race: White
Roll: 1819745

Of course you can't tell if either of these (last two are the same man probably) is your great-grandfather without additional documentation. AND there could be an unlisted Archie Tolbert who didn't make it into the census or military records.

The obvious question is have you obtained Gladys' birth or baptism records? (I have to ask, I can't assume!)

I can't tell from your question whether your great-grandmother had an affair with Archie or whether Gladys was legitimately adopted. If the former, all I can think of is talking to family members or tracking down personal letters or diaries, etc. (still highly unlikely to reveal anything) If she was adopted, try the Ashtabula County Probate Court, 25 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, OH 44047, (440) 576-3451. This court also handled adoptions.

Another tack you might take is trying to find Archie Tolbert's will to see whether Gladys or her mother are mentioned. (It's possible.)

To look at the "hits" I found, see ancestry.com If you don't have access, try one of your local libraries.

Finally, if you do think Gladys was "illegitimate" this article may give you some pointers:
