Position:Home>Genealogy> What is this occupation please?

Question:I have given a link to a census with a George Hawkesworth aged 14 on it. I cannot decipher what his occupation is.
He is probably working in a lace mill, as is his father but I would like to know what his exact occupation was.

He was a bobbin runner. Hugh spools of thread had to be changed at a regular intervals in lace making. The machines moved relatively fast and someone had to manually change the bobbins (spools). Very hard work and very demanding, if the bobbins ran out, he was in real trouble as it would ruin the current run going through the machine. It is surprising that his father had the same job, as only very nimble workers were used in this position.

we cant easily get into that site without signing up........

ancestry.co.uk is a pay to view site,so can't help-you are aware there's a magnifier I take it,otherwise access the site from the Archives section at the library.
Staff can direct you to a handwriting interpretation website.Hope this helps.

I think the second word is definately assistant but with the "long s" I.E. afsistant - thats how they wrote then.

First word Gemper's, Gimper's, Girnper's?

The other idea is go though the ajoining pages of the census and find someone with the same occupation but hopefully written a little more clearly- if it was a common mill job there should be a few of them about.

Father's says 'twisthand'? with emnumerator's mark 'lace'.

Look at previous page of census there is a 'gimp hand' with same enumerators mark 'trim'.

Hello Purplemoon that's a hard one, have a look at this site to see what you can find on there,
http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/index.html
I think it would be brilliant if ancestry.co.uk had a section that deals with occupations , I'll have another look and if I can work it out I will edit my answer.

Ive looked at it, I can not tell what it says but it has the word "trim" wrote out next to it so maybe he made trim for the lace.

Hi, I have access to the site.
The 1st word looks like Gimpers, this is an occupation of Gimp Spinner, Gimp Maker,
or Gimper:-
Minds a machine making gimp, an ornamental banding, often with a wire or
coarse cord running through it; places bobbins of yarn and of wire in
correct sequence into frame, and guides and attaches yarn and wire to a feed
which conducts them into machine; controls power drive of machine; sometimes
specifically designated, e.g. 'Braid Gimper'
The following word looks like the word short for assistant (it wouldn't allow the short version to be shown) followed by island....I have no idea what that could mean. The word handwritten beside it by someone else looks like Orin, or it could be Trin but should be trim.
Sorry I couldn't help more. xXx

You may be logged in, and have an account with ancestry.co.uk. We don't.

You need to tell us what the occupation is.

i think he is a Tennis Player or Cricketer.
