I found over 1000 John Sheehans at ancestry.com in that age range. Do you know the aunt's first name? Maiden name? Do you know John's parents' names? Any additional details would be helpful for your search....

I've done heir tracking for probate courts for years. The place to start is with your aunt's personal belongings. Did she save old Christmas cards? Have a Christmas card list of her own? Did she have an address book? Putting yourself in her head, was she going to leave something to someone she had no contact with in over 40 years? It's pretty uncommon.
