Position:Home>Genealogy> Where can I find my family tree with no effort?

Question:I want to find my family tree, but I can't be bothered with stuff like research or actually talking to people like parents and relatives. I have this way cool ancestor tree chart and I want to fill in names for all the boxes. Money is no object, as long as it is $3.00 or less.

If it helps, the particular surnames are Smith and Jones. I think most of my ancestors lived in either the Americas or Europe. Also I have heard that I am a descendant of Charlemagne.

Where can I go to type in "Smith" or "Jones" and get the names (preferably back to at least 1400AD) to fill in my way cool ancestor chart with?

After doing a little research for you I think it is likely that your tree also expands into a chinese family named "Li", an Italian branch of "Rossi" and a line of German "Muller"s. Hope this helps with your search!!

A whole $3.00! Wow! Good luck with that.

You and the other powers on this board have me rolling on the floor laughing. $3.00 or less? Wow! You are a big spender. I want it free!!! No Wait! How about you pay me and give me the info I need.

EDIT: I think you are part Cherokee too...

Well since they are aliens, that means that the children were born before the parents and that they had children from the age of 8 until they were 89....

I FOUND THEM FOR YOU! They are all in some file over on another site, the guy says he has 3 trillion persons in his database (but, hey, he doesn't know if it is right or not, he just collects them off the internet). Some of the kids have alien fathers from space ships.. I think I can find that site for you too.
Cabin fever. The natives are getting restless.

well? won't the naturalization files show place of birth to be Mars?? choking w/ laughter

well, then, you're screwed. :-)
Destined to never know anything about yourself--ah, what a sad fate...

Info about your family tree is worth 3.00? Talk about cheap. You do need to do some serious research to trace your lineage back along the many family lines with those names, and in special if you wish to support your claim to being a descendant of Charlemagne. 3.00 will certainly not even begin to cover the electric bill needed to power your computer as you search online. Yes, you do need to talk to your relatives and take it from there, family history is an invaluable source that you will not find in any website. You could also start by dishing out 100 for the National Geographic genome project, that would at least tell you something about your genetic ancestry.

Get serious.

Go to a psychiatrist and let them hypnotize you. I think I remember you in one of my past lives as Cleopatra's chamber maid.

Use the IGI and make wild guesses and leaps of faith! You'll have a tree in no time at all! AND Familysearch.org costs nothing! Give me the 3 Dollars and I'll do it for you!

1) First, starting with your parents and grandparents, get all the vital statistics you can. Old family bibles are also often a good place to start looking for family history.

2) Go to the government document section of the public library if you live in the United States. Census records are available on microfilm from 1790 to 1930, but they don't really start showing family relationships until about 1850. Use what you find in the US Census records to verify what you have learned from family members. Most older adults can probably at least give you the names and approximate dates of birth and death of their parents and grandparents and maybe even great grandparents as well as where they were born.

3) Write county clerks to verify marriages, deaths, and births. This won't take you back to Charlemagne, but it's how most of us started researching family history before computers came along.

4) Use online resources that don't have a subscription price; for example, http://www.familysearch.org

No effort? The method with the least effort would be to hire a professional genealogist to do it for you.
And, at present, unless a direct relative of yours (siblings, parents, grandparents) have already done the research, there just is no way without intensive AND extensive research.
REALLY INTENSIVE AND REALLY EXTENSIVE.
There are 3,056,034 people in the U.S. with the last name Smith.
Statistically the 1st most popular last name.
There are 1,886,478 people in the U.S. with the last name Jones.
Statistically the 4th most popular last name.
That is in accordance with: http://www.howmanyofme.com/search/

No matter what, you need to start with your parents and work your way back. For me, in 600 years I would find 15 to 20 generations.
15. 16,384 16,384 - 32,767
16. 32,768 32,768 - 65,535
17. 65,536 65,536 - 131,071
18. 131,072 131,072 - 262,143
19. 262,144 262,144 - 524,287
20. 524,288 524,288 - 1,048,576
What this chart shows is how many persons it would take at EACH GENERATION to produce you, assuming no one married a relative. E.g., for the 15th generation it would take 16,384 persons just for the 15th generation or, accumulatively, 32,768 persons.
So, have fun!

Hey Cousin!

Remember when your 5th Great-grandfather borrowed 100 duckets to by that castle and said that his 5th great-grandchildren would pay it back to our side of the family? With interest?

(I'll bet the contract's right up there in your attic with the unused souvenir Disneyland E tickets.)

Payment DUE!

Come on over to my house. I'll do it for you. I'll throw in a family coat of arms for each family, too, since I'm a nice guy. I do it all the time.

Great post!
