Position:Home>Genealogy> French last names?

Question:I need some French last names of the 19th or 18th century, please. This is for a book, so I really want it to be accurate. This would be the last name of a wealthy family that owns a lrge bank line. They live in Le Havre, then move to Paris, if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Hmmm...LeHavre was a very overcrowded port town. You may want to change that to Normandie and find one of the beautiful little hamlets near LeHavre. LeHavre itself wasn't a romantic town with people of wealth. Calvados and Caen were beautiful towns that you might consider.

As for names, LaVigne was a wealthy family from the area, as was the Dompierre-St-Martin family. Richard-St-Hillaire, Bergenoir, Cousture and Therriot were also great names from the region. When names were hyphenated, it's because the region used to use "dit" names, so the two names were merged and hyphenated. It would show a family of tremendous breeding.

You'd also have quite a few Calvinists in the area, so look for biblical first names like Isaac, Isaiah and Benjamin in addition to the traditional saint names of the Catholics in the region.

I don't know if these fit in with your type of French last name, but here's a few: Armand (or DeArmand), Monat/Monet, Duquesne, DuPont. Mine's a variant of Armand, and I know for sure my ancestors were French. Hope that helps some.
