Van Kleef is definitely a Dutch name. I have several in my own family tree who hailed from the Groningen province of the Netherlands. Standard Dutch names dictate that Van means "From" . In the name Van Kleef, Kleef is the Dutch word for "stick" .

Anyway, if you feel the desire to do any Dutch research, there is a great website to luck up civil records back to the 1811 time frame. You would need to do the research back to the ancestor that immigrated before it is effective though. The site is

The site is in both Dutch and English.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Dutch. Usually spelled van Cleef, it not an uncommon name in the Netherlands.

looks German.

Just looked it up on Ancetry.com

Looks like it came from Holland, Neitherlands and Belgium.
Ancetry.com says "Most Vankleef immigrants to the US came from Rotterdam, Netherlands".

it sounds german 2 me.

Vankleef probably was Van Kleef before they landed in the USA from the Netherlands. Or at Ellis Island they compacted the name.
