I think your friend may be well-meaning, but misguided. The Yaqui lived in what's now northern Mexico even before the conquistadores arrived. So that's long, long before the Cherokee were moved out to Oklahoma. While there may be some Yaqui who are also part Cherokee, it isn't true for the whole tribe. Here's a link to the tribal history that you can use to educate your friend on your tribe: http://www.pascuayaqui-nsn.gov/aboutus/n...

I'm pretty sure they lived in different parts of the continent

****Yaquis came from the Sonoran area and Cherokees came from the Appalachian area, so any connection would have to be pretty far in the past

Most American indians from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego have common genetic stock in the last 15,000 years. The Na Dené, group, which includes the Athabascans and Navajo, but not the Yaqui or Cherokee is of more recent stock and their ancestors crossed from Asia later than the rest.

So yes in a way Yaqui and Cherokee have common roots in the way that Irish and Iranians have common roots.
