I would VERY STRONGLY suggest that you explore the discussion about the Abel (wife Susan Bixby), which is posted at genforum. You can also browse the entries at rootsweb.. what is easy to see is that there were a number of men with the same name and in the same area.
Looking quickly at this, it appears that the 1801 birth of Abel is based on his age from the census. That isn't conclusive, since census ages have a huge tendency to be off by 1-2 years. If he WAS born in 1801, that would not be consistent with a documented marriage of a couple, in Dec of 1801.

I cannot agree with the comment that a first son was ALWAYS named for the father. It is customary, but not always. It is also frequent that first sons are named for the PATERNAL GRANDFATHER.. thus, completely possible that an earlier Abel Blood had 4 or more sons, all of whom named their first sons Abel, for the grandfather. That is one reason why you often find several men with the same name, in the same locality, and it takes a lot of solid proof to sort them out.
I am seeing documentation there of an Abel who married a Nabby Keep in 1792. At least one person sees the given name of Keep in descendents of Abel/ Susan Bixby. That is a good clue, and may turn into 'proof'.
