Lahla, I think you are getting into something that is sometimes cultural and sometimes just parents' choice.

First and middle names are given names. Our parents' usually give them to us. In the past Catholics did not choose a middle name until they were confirmed. That way the child had some say in what their middle name was, based on some saint they admired.

However, I have seen some cases where people have more than 2 given names. Actually my mother's oldest brother claimed he was named Henry Lee Franklin Lewis Peter Ault. They wanted to honor both grandfathers and his father when naming him. However, he just went by Henry Lee Ault. He has been dead since 1977 so I see no harm in putting his name on my posting.

Now what is called the last name I prefer calling the surname. As in some countries the surname comes first. The double surname where a wife retains her maiden name in the past was only used by titled or well to do English families. In recent years many Americans are using the double surname and it is usually the wife's maiden name followed by her husband's surname.

But in Hispanic countries it is different. It is a legal requirement.

The husband's name is his father's surname followed by his mother's maiden name. For instance if his father was a Rodriguez and his mother a Garcia. He would be RodriguezGarcia. You would address him as Senor Rodriguez.

The wife's maiden name is Morales. Therefore her name and the children's name would be RodriguezMorales

until

the daughter gets married.

She drops her mother's name Morales, pushes her father's name Rodriguez to the right and put her husband's name Hernandez in front and she and her children wouold be HernandezRodriguez.

Also, Hispanic cultures can be where they have a multitude of given names. My former boss was Hispanic and he rattled off a bunch of names he had one day and I said his parents wanted as many saints as possible looking after him because they knew he would need it.

catholics get a name when confirmed.

Heck I wish I knew

Different cultures do it different ways, that's all. :)

its a personal choice

i don't know! that's weird.

wtf ive never hurd of that...i just thought a middle name is usually the second choice of name your parents give you or whatever goes with your name....

singh

people call me Sim

i don't have a middle name cuz my parent's suck. but when u get married you don't inherit a middle name, you just get another last name.

?

they want to retain their maiden name.
taking me as an example, my middle name is taken after my father- must be an ethnic thing.

It's up to our parents. When we are born they are in control.

Well, when you get married, you can choose to keep your maiden name as your middle name, and/ or you can stick with no middle name. That's basically how it works.

Well some people like to keep there last name in there whole name so the put it as there middle i gess lol

I think though I don't know, some parents just can't decide on a name and give their child 2 names. Thats why my name is James and my middle name is Alexander!

I thought everyone had a middle name.

they wern't given one by their parents, and if they want to keep thier name and take thier spouse's name they have to make thier maiden name thier middle name. i think.

I have my moms middle name, Rene, In whicH I got because of the family behind me. some people chose not to because of their religion, or because they dont believe they need one

When you get married to someone and don't want to give up your birth name, then you hyphenate it. It does not become your middle name, it's just an extra long last name. IE: my maiden name is Taylor, my married name is Smith, so it would be Melissa Taylor-Smith.

Yes if they what too
every body call me 481-3881 i do not care if you call me !!!!!!!!!!!!!

none of the boys in my family have a middle name - it's the lynch tradition.

but the girls do?

strange..

They choose to do so. There is right or wrong. It is just what you want to do. Some of it is based on culture.

Middle names are historically a fairly recent addition. My wife had no middle name, and she found it a nuisance because when filling out forms, everybody expected her to have one. She followed the traditional custom of taking my surname and using her maiden name as a middle name.

the way this occurs is they keep thier first last name and with thier new last name the make it that way thier old last name becomes thier new middle name it is strang but it works

When a woman marries, her maiden surname becomes her middle name. Example: Mary Jane Smith who marries Joe Jones becomes Mary Smith Jones, and drops Jane. This doesn't mean she must use Smith-Jones as a last name. She may use Mary S. Jones. Parents give a middle name either to honor a loved one or to add a nice sound to the first name. Usually, middle given names aren't used.

I had a middle name from birth, my parents gave it to me, plus when I got married I kept my birth last name, therefor I have 2 middle names now. It is the parents decision to give a person a middle name at birth or not, and it is the persons decision themselves if they want to keep their birth name and add it on when they get married. Some cultures or religions also dominate if a person has a middle name or not

my X's family is Hispanic, and their middle names are their mothers maiden names...his mom's is Ortega, for example. another way to some people have their middle names is to use their maiden name as a middle name without hyphenation, an example of this would be Hilary Rodham Clinton. in my family, it was a way to honor my father's mother, i have her maiden name for my middle name.
