First of all, it is important to know the circumstances in which your "family" got hold of your child. Did you give your child up for adoption? Did your family have a court order granting any of them custody of your child?

Second, if your child is under 18, you have no choice but to go through the legal system to obtain information on the child's whereabout.

If the child is over 18, whoever tries to help you will need to have your child's permission to give out her contact information. That's the law.

Third. You should not be saying anything about your sources of income. There are many predators online who would do whatever it takes to get a hold of the little possessions you have.

You can ask your local police for help, as well as your nearest Legal Aid Society.

It sounds like you need to contact Legal Aid and Social Services for some help. Genealogists may be a sympathetic lot, but your question is very personal and needs help from people who can get answers for you.

I can only guess that you gave this child up because you could not support her, and that your family believes your contacting her would disrupt her life.

Unless you are disabled so severely you cannot work in any capacity, how about getting it together enough to rely on your own income rather than the government's safety net? That might make you seem responsible enough that your family might change their minds.

It's also possible that your family does not know what became of her. If she was adopted, your parental rights ceased, and in many places, the records are sealed. Her family can take her with them wherever they move to, far away from her birth mother.
