Export the file as GEDCOM format, then import into the next application you want to use, GEDCOM is the most well known file format for family tree stuff.

NexUK, above me, is right and deserves the 10 points.

I'd advise you to export it,import it and check before uninstalling Generations. If the GEDCOM is named "MyFam", then, after you import it into FTM there will be a file named "MyFam.LST" in the FTM directory. You can open it with Notepad and see if there are problems.

Some programs have unsupported facts. When I imported GEDCOM files from FTM users into my Family Origins program, FTM's "Cause of Death" used to be a problem, several versions of Family Origins ago. Most programs will give you options when you export a GEDCOM. Go for the simplest one.

Look at the notes, after you import. If they are messed up - spaces in words that shouldn't be there - then either the export or import tried to break the notes into 72-character lines and muffed it.

If you have pictures, the links may not come through. You might have to re-establish the links to them.
