As well as most of the sites listed above, I've found Rootschat really useful:

If you go to the section for the county you're interested in, they list websites that members have found, and there is also a section where you can ask members to look things up for you in their local records etc (also, although they're not supposed to, I suspect that those who have paid subscriptions to ancestry etc or bought commercial census CDs do actually look up info for other members on that)

There are also lots of small websites dealing with different sections of the country. Either google the parish you are looking for (e.g. "Stratford-upon-Avon parish records" as your search term) or check to see if genuki lists any links for your area of the country:

If you live near enough to London to visit for the day, it's worth joining the Society of Genelaogists as their library has a huge collection of parish records and monumental inscription transcripts and microfiches. Membership is expensive, but worth it, as you can discover so much, particularly if you get back before 1837, when national records can no longer help.

Try genes reunited.

Try the mormons site you will find it interesting

Try these......FreeBMD, FreeReg, FreeCen, genes reunited, Family search.org, Rootsweb.
Please be aware, to fully research your family tree is not without cost, and somewhere along the line you will need to buy certificates, and visit certain repositories to furthur your research. Also be aware that you will NOT get very far with the free sites unless you happen to stumble across someone who is researching someone who is in your tree.

have you tried www.freebmd.org.uk I found it very useful for my research.

check out cindislist for further ideas

Be aware that "Civil Registration" began in 1837, and information you need prior to that will stored mainly in Parish records, there is also the "Pallott's marriage index" on www.ancestry.co.uk. The local family history society's have the parish records on CD as well.
Hope this helps.
