Question:I thought these records gave you all kinds of info. I looked up someone's birth record and all it gave me was their year of birth and mother's maiden name - no date of birth. And how are you supposed to look up marriages if you have no idea what year they were married or what their maiden name was?

You are obviously searching the BMD after 1911 if you are in the UK, because that's when the mums maiden name was included in the birth index.
I was always told to assume the person is of "full age" when they married, so add 21 years onto the year of birth and start searching. It was legal for a girl to marry at the age of twelve and upwards with parental consent, the minimum age for a boy was 14, this changed in 1929, when both male and female minimum age was raised to 16. If there is a child in the marriage then I would check around the birth year of the first child for marriage dates a s well.
I hope this helps.

You have to do the work. Start with what you know.
check rootsweb, heritage quest and similiar sites. They all have good info.
