When starting a family tree, start with yourself, then add you child, and the work back. If you just want to do your maternal side then that is the side you work on.

Your child is the last generation. You start with as many generations back as you can. Haven't you ever seen a family tree? Take a look at some online.

Lots of ways to do it.

If you are making one for your son, it makes sense to put him on it.

Lovey is right. Your child would be the last generation. If you want to do just a tree of your mothers side, work back person by person, generation by generation, until you run stuck. The person who is the furthest back will be the first generation.

The important thing to remember is that when you do research, you should always start with the present and work your way back, one generation at a time.

If you are looking for a pretty chart to fill in a search for "family tree templates" can come up with some, or searching images for family tree.

However, if you only want your mom's ancestors and you and your son you probably will want to do a modified bow tie tree with her as the focus.

Your starting person (#1 on a five generation chart) will determine which ancestors you are looking for and the numbering system you will use to identify those ancestors.

If you want to look for your ancestors only, use yourself as #1, you father is #2, your mother is #3, etc. If you want to research your child's father's side, use your child as #1, her father as #2 and you as #3.
