There is no magic website. You need to start with you and work backward, documenting with birth, death, marriage certificates, obits and cemetery records as you go.

Anything you find online you should use as a tool. If you find anything its because someone else is working that same line. Usually that researcher has not documented their work or they have copied it from someone else.

If you are just starting out I suggest that you get a book called unpuzzling your past. It takes you step by step in tracing your family. It's well worth the $20 you spend.

There are tons of free and paid websites out there for you to use as a tool.

Good luck in your quest

www.ancestry.com

(don't put real names on the WWW, you never know who's reading and may use the names for a bad purpose)

With all respect, the first reply is inaccurate.
It is correct that you should not include names and personal info about LIVING persons online. To include the name of a family that you need info about, is completely standard for genealogy purposes. I normally avoid making such statements towards other posters, but in this case, I think it is necessary.
There are thousands of websites for genealogy online, and ancestry.com is only ONE of them. For beginning, there are numerous tutorials that explain the research process. You start with yourself, and using documentation, establish your connection to each of your parents, then grandparents. When those persons are living (or likely to be), you will have to locate those documents directly, ie you will not find your own birth certificate on the internet.
Another clarification is to not overwhelm yourself by looking for a surname. You will want to find the individual person, who you can prove to be your ancestor/ relative. In order to find the records, you must find the resources that apply to where you live.
One of the best overall sources in my opinion is
www.cyndislist.com
On the first page, you will find a section for beginners. Once you have some leads on what and where, she includes resources for nearly every locality in the world (and then some that I have never heard of). At rootsweb.com, you can also find email lists that you can subscribe to, for different localities, thus you can network with persons who have experience in those areas. Ancestry is heavy on records for the US, which may not be workable for your family.
Good luck.

Don't get your hopes up. Most of the free genealogy data on the web is about Americans and their European roots, with the UK coming in second. Those names look like they are Filipino. If they are, try here:

http://www.cyndislist.com/asia.htm

It has just 3 references for "Filipino" and 5 for "Philippines". There isn't much out there for you folks, sadly.

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.c...
has 100+ entries for Canlas, but most of them are the same, from a lady who added new data bases instead of updating; so what looks like a lot of data is really her same old data again and again, with different upload dates.
