Position:Home>Genealogy> Stevens Family Information?

Question:I am looking for anyone surnamed Stevens that may have already done a geneology on thier family. I would like to find out if some of the info I have is correct.
I am seeking information on a Hezekiah Stevens who lived in Smith county Tennessee and is shown on the 1830 census. Also a John Stevens shown on the 1840, 50, and 1860 census. I believe John is the grandfather of a George M Stevens who is my great grandfather. If anyone can help me I would be forever greatful.

Went back and looked at the actual census page. The census taker used a lot of flourishes in his writing and what was transcribed as George W. D. definitely could be George M. D. (in fact, the D was very flourished so that too could have been another letter) which would match the gravestone.

Well, based on the 1860 census (if I found the right John Stevens), it seems there are two male children (could have been more, given his age, that had already left home). They are...

Goodlow Stevens b. abt. 1849
George W. D. Stevens b. abt. 1858.

Note the second name "George". If John was in fact the grandfather of your George M. Stevens, then given the same surname, one would at least suspect that the intervening person (the father of George M. Stevens) would likely be one of the two identified individuals.

Do know that Goodlow was a private in the 4th Tennessee Infantry from Sept of 1864 to Aug 20, 1865. He was also in the Tennessee Census of 1890 in Smith County.

Just some info that might help.

My maiden name is Stevens. I'm not sure I can help you out, but I had an uncle that traced our family back for many, many years. Email me and I will try to find his information.

Rootsweb(free site) has almost 394,000 entries in family trees for Stevens in World Connect. Just put Stevens or a full name in the Rootsweb (World Connect) block and once you see the trees, if you see something that interest you, probe on a name and it will take you to a screen that will give you the name and email address of the submitters. Rootsweb also has message boards and mailing list. You can post an inquiry under a surname or location.

Just don't take as absolute fact everything you see in family trees on any website, free or paid. The information is user submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented. Even if you see the same info on the same people repeatedly by many different submitters that is no guarantee it is correct. A lot of people copy without verifying.
