Position:Home>Genealogy> I am trying to do my family tree, I am looking for info on any of these surnames

Question:Palmater, Davis, Sitts, Adair, Campble, all from otsego county NY area. (moms side).
Williams, Greenfield, all from Oneida county NY area.(dads side). would love to hear from anyone looking for same type of info or anyone who knows any info. I have traced back to 1850 for my moms side (I think) but I am having a harder time with my dads side.

New York was pretty crowded in 1850, but you might look at their religions. Church records can be extremely helpful, even in modern times. Church records give you far more info than an old census would, and many church records are on-line.

For kicks, try going to http://www.books.google.com , and entering in names and looking at the results. If you search under "full-view," any books will be public domain and you can download them for free. There are tons of historical & genealogical books there, and if someone on your lines married into a prominent literary family, you might get some leads that would in turn lead you to primary documents like birth certificates, baptismal records, etc.

Good luck and happy hunting.

You can go to Rootsweb(free site) and put a name in the World Connect block and after the trees come up, if you see something that interest you, probe on a name and it will take you to a screen that will give you the name and email address of the submitter. Sometimes a submitter might not know too much as the person whose name they have that interest you might just be someone who married into their family line but often times they will.

Also, just don't take as absolute fact everything you see in family trees on any website, free or paid. The information is user submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented. You might see different information on the same people from different submitters. Then you will see repeatedly the same information from many different submitters but no documentation. A lot of people copy without verifying. Also if they have Family Tree Maker and Genealogy. Com, they can easily merge another's family tree into theirs and then upload that merged tree into Ancestry.Com, Rootsweb, FamilySearch.org, or Genealogy.Com. Actually Genealogy.Com is guilty of encouraging people to do that sort of thing which isn't good at all. There are errors in family trees on the internet. Use the information as CLUES as to where to get the documentation, not as absolute fact.

I might add that Ancestry.Com, Rootsweb and Genealogy.Com have message boards.
You can go under a surname or a location. If you put one on Rootsweb it will also be on Ancestry.Com's and vice versa.

Have you tried:

US Gen Web county sites
GenForum boards for the surname(s) and counties
(Free) Ancestry boards for surnames & Counties
RootsWeb mailing lists for the surnames & counties
Census images at the library or Family History Center

If so, I'm out of general ideas. You might join a couple of the mailing lists.

If not, and you need links, write and I'll be happy to send them.
