This site has free software called PAF, look in the lower right corner of the page, for making a family tree. You can then export it as a GEDCOM format which allows you to share it with other people. It holds all kinds of information about your family. It's a good program, I've used it.

Using an outline format is a good way to gather the data, but if you want an artistic result, draw a tree with your Mom as the trunk, the first generation as major branches with the next generation as branches off of them and so on with the latest generation just being twigs.

There's lots of ways to start a family tree. I suggest that you write down your family information first and then download a family tree program.

Download suggestions:
- Go to familysearch.org and download a program called Personal Ancestral File (PAF) version 5.2.18.0
- I find that a family tree program called Legacy is also excellent: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
Choose the Standard Edition: you do not have to pay for this version

It mayhelp to explain that in technical genealogy, there are a few different 'charts' used. The usual "tree" is normally something that shows a person's ancestry back, limited to direct parents, gr grandparents, etc. Another type is a descendant chart, or coming from one person "down" and showing their children/grandchildren. This normally is in more of an outline form, not so artistic geared. For example.. doing it as a pre-done graphic thing is very difficult. You can't predict how many spaces might be needed.
In MOST cases, persons working their ancestry, will concentrate to working back. The persons involved are 'complete'.. they won't be divorcing, having new babies, etc. I've run into persons who take the opposite approach..and wind up getting totally frustrated because the pieces (persons) are still living and evolving. That isn't a problem if you are keeping a database, which can be edited, and new descendant charts printed when needed. If a person is wanting a decorative type presentation, those can't be edited.
My guess is that you may be wanting to do more of a decorative thing, perhaps for Christmas. Nothing wrong with that, except to try and explain why it won't fit the standard type things that researchers normally use. The standard things are geared towards research, more so than what you want.
I used the term "decorative family charts" in google, and come up with many hits, including businesses. THEN at the top of the page, I clicked on "images" which gives a selection of images, some may give you an idea of what is close to your needs (if my assumption is right). You can browse through to see if something looks like what you have in mind.
I can offer another idea... you might consider a scrapbook type thing, maybe with the 'main' chart as the front page, then a page with some notes about each of the kids/ grandkids. If done in a nice 3 ring binder, it would have the option to change if ever needed. It could include pictures, of course.
Me, I am intending to scan all the best family photos to cds as a gift for the family this year.

Here is a website where you can get a pedigree chart for free.

There are many other forms on this website also.
