Question Home

Position:Home>Genealogy> My ancestors owned a mill in west yorkshire - I have been to the West Yorkshire

Question:is nothing in their catalogue regarding this mill but plenty of property transactions (They also were landlords of a lot of houses.) Is there any other site or organisation that will hold archives about this company, such as when it was founded etc.
I think it was in operation from the early 1700's to the 1830's.

Thank you

I have found this website that is all about the Spen Valley in the past. It is actually about a book which was written from Roman times Right up to and including the 19th Century. There is actually a CD rom of the book which is for sale if you click on the heading. Apparently it tells you all about the mills and industry in the places you are interested in.

Here is the link:

Edit
Check this site out....shows Thomas Cockhill at Almondbury and Also Kirkheaton as Mill owners may be related.

Littletown comes under the Parish of Birstall and is in the Spen Valley

thats cool all my ancestors owned farms in ilkey, yorkshire and began woodrup cycles in england

Try getting in contact with the local parish. They will hold records of people and properties in their parish dating back a long way.

What about the land registry...I dont know if they hold records that go that far back but its worth a look. Where is it and what is it called???

Try some of these sites, hope they help

Have you tried looking at the family history society, the Notts one is excellent they have the records series at the Notts one so they must have something similar at the West Yorkshire one, the first link is a contact address for all the Yorkshire family history societies.
