Position:Home>Genealogy> Brick Wall Challenge: Who was Stanton Bailey's Father?

Question:Stanton Bailey married Lydia Comer in Wayne Co Indiana,1831. This courthouse marriage got Lydia expelled from the New Garden MM for marrying contrary to discipline. No entry exists in the 1965 Indiana Quaker Indices for a Stanton & Lydia after the marriage, and no signs of this Stanton being related to the elder Stanton in Randolph & Wayne Co. Stanton died before 1850, where Lydia appears remarried to a William Kirkman. No sign in Quaker Index. Lydia is dead by 1860, William remarries moves to Missouri. Lydia & Stanton's sons move to Whitley then Starke Co.
No will or probate found for Lydia or this Stanton in Wayne Co. Eldest daughter Nancy Bailey married John Thornburg who was from a Quaker family, youngest married his brother George. JT & Nancy apparently were Quakers still when they moved to Iroquois Co Illinois. No sign of any others staying in Quaker Faith, no apparent listing of JT's marriage in Quaker Index from 1965. Grave locations for Stanton and Lydia unknown.

some ideas, fwiw
A Stanton Bailey is in Randolph co, Ind in 1820; he is between 26-45, but wife is 16-26. There are 3 children under 10. Not so old. (notice the ages of 3 children as shown in rootsweb file below who are born before 1820)

William Comer is in the same county, and has a daughter of possible age.
Lydia and Stanton are married 1831 as you have. She may be wife # 2.

Lydia and William Kirkman were married 19 June 1845. This narrows your date for Stanton's death.
Maybe not will or probate, but did you hunt guardianship?
One file on rootsweb gives her date of death as 23 Apr 1849 (source? ) but, also says she is born @ 1826 then married in 1831.
You would want to run a search for deeds, if Stanton owned land, it would have gone to Lydia at death, then probably to Kirkman when she died.

this file shows a Stanton as son of David Bailey and Ruth White. Dates of birth and marriage fit the 1820 census but do show wife one. There is indication of death in mid 1830s (what source?? ) and mentions a burial ground. The submitter might have the answers you need.

gee, the Comers were solid Quaker, weren't they?
this file has a Robert Comer, w/ daughter Lydia born about the right time and place to marry in 1831. Maybe worth checking that out,.

try the links below, they may just help, I hope you do.

Good luck and good hunting

I'm confused. Why would you be looking in 1965 for stuff in the 1800's.
Are they Quakers? The way you wrote this it looks like Bailey isn't and Comer is. Then you're looking in the Quaker records.
Go back and edit this question so its not so confusing. Then maybe we can try to help you. Women back then didn't usually have a will. If anyone did it would be the husband. It may also be that Starke County wasn't Starke County at that time. Did you look in the neighboring counties?
