Position:Home>Genealogy> What nationality does the last name GOLANSKY seem from?...?

Question:Well, the 'sky' ending usually indicates that it is a Russian name but 'Golan' is Hebrew so I think that it is a Russified Jewish name. Golan was a city of refuge in ancient Israel. Today there is an area called the Golan Heights.

Many immigrants altered their names. It's probably Polish from Golanski.

sky or ski means -son of- or -from- in Polish, so Golansky means son of Golan or from Golan

Ancestry.Com is showing that 5 Golansky immigrant to the U. S. gave their place of origin as Russia.

I have read where generally a ski ending is Polish and the sky ending is Russian. Now, that cannot be an exact rule of thumb. A good part of what is now Poland had been under Russian rule from the latter part of the 18th century until the Treaty of Versailles.

Also I believe a large share of immigrants to the U.S. from Russia were Jewish due to the constant pograms of the Czars.
