I've put "Alexander McLintock Football" into Google and found a match within 2 seconds flat, though it is biased towards Scottish records, it does name at least one club:

There has to be more football stats sites out there with facts and figures going back to the late 1800s. If you know what teams he played for, then try one of their fan sites, as they usually have a hall of fame of past players, and might even have photos. If all else fails, the National Football Museum in Preston might be able to help you out with a biography. Any half-decent 19th century sporting almanac might also give him a name-check, but for this kind of thing, you'll have to get up off your computer chair and visit a library in person. Sadly, not everything is on the internet! Even the English FA or Scottish FA might be able to help you out. I guess it depends what their record-keeping is like and whether anything from back then was kept. Someone somewhere will have his career details at the very least.

He gets a name-check here as well, as a winner of the Scottish Cup in 1877:

Armed with exact dates like this, you'd probably be best advised to go to a library somewhere and look up a report of the game in a period newspaper on microfilm. If you had time, you could go through the whole season looking for the results of his games. Granted, that's doing it the hard way though.

It'll all be out there somewhere if you Google for it!!

For that generation start by putting your mother's maiden name into 1901 Census. Providing her name isn't to common you should be able to see clues there like job, date of birth and siblings.

Just type Alexander McLintock into Google or Yahoo and a site will come up about him, the number of times he was capped, etc.

The 1901 census would be a good start but I would also try contacting the FA, and if you have any idea who he played for then contact the clubs in question, the google news archive section may also help.

Good luck and good hunting

Yes, if you also want to know about his ancestry though, there are quite a few Alexander McLintocks on the 1901 Scottish census, so it would help if you knew his approximate birthdate, and location. Also the 1901 census isn't free, but someone who subscribes to something like ancestry.co.uk might look it up for you.
