Unfortuatly most websites you will have to pay to be able to get the information you require. Birth, Marriage and death records are one that is available for free. just type Free BMD into google and you will get the website for it. For free 1881 census information go to the www.familysearch.org this site also overs the IGI (International genelogical Index) which gives and searchable database of Baptisms and Marriages from about 1538 onwards. But it is not complete and has many mistakes so you should use this only as a guide. Also go to your liberary they should have seachable census returns for the area you live in. If you live in london you can search the BMD and censuses for free at the Family History Centre in Angel. you can also go to the National Archives in Kew but take some ID so you can join, it is free. Also ask about starting off in Genes Reuntied forums. Ancestry is fantastic as it has a large number of Censuses and BMD records. There are a few magazines available as well for the family historian that will guide you in the right direction. Be prepared to spend a lot of Money. It is £7 a certificate and thats 3 per person. I have managed to trace my family history back to 1670 so far and I have spent a fortune.

www.rootsweb.com

ancestry.co.uk is pretty good. I recently found lots of long lost relatives on there. You can view some of the functions for free, but some require membership. My local library has full membership, and you can use their log on details.

You don't need to pay, I think you're my sister.

Ive been to a few sights and they all lure you in with a taste of what you want then throw a fee at you.good luck.

Kevin is right - building your family history is a long, expensive job. Genesreunited is a fun site, but I wouldnt trust any of the info on there without checking the original sources as anyone can post any old rubbish on the web, as Im sure you know.

familysearch.org and FreeBMD

Stop searching for your family tree! Family trees don't grow on trees, you know! You have To BUILD one up!
Ok, ok, you know that already! If you want to find a free site on which to build up a tree, go to www.computeractive.co.uk and type in 'genealogy' and you should find a site there. I cannot remember what it's called.

Try the web site below, it's very good

Good luck and god hunting

Jesus christ of Latter day saints. All you have to do is sign up and its free.
Gencircles.com Searching is free
census online.com free
Ellis Island.com to look up your ancesters that immigrated here. Which is free when you sign up.

There's plenty you can use that are free, or have free and paid memberships.
Hope some of these links help.

Tribal.com

Many public libraries subscribe to ancestry.com, so if you use their computers, you can search for free.

As well as the excellent www.freebmd.org.uk and www.freecen.org.uk, I've found the following sites helpful (mostly for UK research):

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php is a free family history chat forum (mostly for the UK) where members are often willing to search census returns, parish records etc, if you ask them nicely. It also lists online resources members have found useful by county.

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/... is a free online database of trade directories.

http://www.genogold.com is a frustratingly incomplete site - but it's brilliant if one of the transcribers happens to be from the same hamlet as your ancestors - it has a complete searchable database of some parishes, but only a handful of the thousands in England. It's worth checking out, though, as you may strike lucky - I've found it indispensable as it covers the area of Devon where my family is from.

http://www.genuki.org.uk is quite a confusing and boringly laid out site, but once you get used to the navigation, it can give you great links to other sites.

http://www.ingeneas.com/ has a free facility to search for immigrants to Canada

Look up the websites of the family history societies of counties where your ancestors are from - they sometimes have message boards and forums open to non-members.

And it's also worth just randomly googling family names - most of my great free internet finds have been located that way.

If you live near London, the British Newspaper Library in Colindale is a great resource:

Browsing the births, marriages and deaths in old local papers at the BNL is a great way of finding bmd info, particularly after 1900.

Also, if you live in or near London, the Society of Genealogists is worth joining, even though the annual fee is quite hefty, as they have a library full of transcripts of parish registers, census info, graveyard monumental inscriptions etc. and the cost compares very favourably to ordering bmd certificates.
