Ancestry.Com shows the name from the Middle English and the French personal name Michel, vernacular form of Michael. The root person of your surname's father might have been Michel or Michael.

or it could be from Ireland (Connacht) surname adopted as equivalent of Mulvhill.

See the link below from The National Genealogical Society.

We have a regular on this board named Mitchell. I am sure you will hear something from him.

I don't think angels had children. The theology of my church is that they have always been pure spirits.

Rootsweb(freesite) has over 523,000 entries in family trees for Mitchell. Pull up the site and put a name in the World Connect block. Once you have the trees, if you see anything that interest you, probe on a name and it will take you to a screen that will give you the name and email address of the submitters.

Now, there are errors in family trees on the internet, free or paid. The informaiton is user submitted and very seldom documented. Even when you see the same information repeatedly from many different submitters that is no guarantee it is correct. A lot of people copy without verifying.

In addition to what Shirley T has said about the origin of the surname Mitchell, you also might have had an ancestor who was a really big man since Mitchell was also a nickname meaning big, from Middle English "muchel".

Then again, some names are taken from Saint's names, for example, Nostradamus and Sinclair (for St. Clair).
