You could try writing to the Colchester newspaper (address a letter to The Readers Letters Column) and ask if anyone knows what happened to him. It's a ploy which works well.
Other possibility - if you know his old school, is there an Old Pupils' Society?
If you know his old address - have you tried contacting his neighbours? I still send Xmas cards to people who moved years ago from my street.
