along with a word of caution..
These guides offer the most common or known surnames. MANY surnames in America (or elsewhere) are different from the original. An example from my research.. Fillingham (a village in England) became Fullingim, during the 1800s when people were illiterate, except for clerks who entered the name in records as they THOUGHT the right spelling was.
In addition.. contrary to popular thinking, many names do NOT have one single point of origin. They show up in different countries (and had different "meanings"). It can be very misleading to assume that Smith for example, is an English name, thus your ancestor *must* be of English background.
I encourage people to know the difference between tracing a name, and tracing their ancestry. They are not the same thing.

I don't know the answer but I 'm starring the question so i can keep an eye on the answers you get ,great question.

Prynne? You mean like Hester? That would be way too much of a coinky-dink.
