Position:Home>Genealogy> Help! I am new at the "family history" game and new in the computer wo

Question:ago here on this site asking if a pedigree chart could be printed using my computer. I got two good answers, but because of my limited computer skills, I have not been able to find exactly what I want. I would like to have a chart showing my family back ten or twelve generations. I will go to a store and buy it if necessary. A thought about printing one that big from the computer: On the extreme right, the spaces would be very, very small. I think I likely need a commercially printed chart which I will be happy to buy if I knew where to go for it. Help me.

get a book called unpuzzling your past by Emily Croom. There are forms in the back of the book and the book takes you step by step in doing your family history. Its a great book and easy to understand. I still use mine even after 15+ years of researching.

The other thing you will want to do is invest in a good genealogy program. I just read a review on software. http://legacyfamilytree.com/
Here is the link that you can read about it. They say it is "Very new user friendly" so it should work great for you. I plan on switching to it.

here is a link that you can click for forms. then on the one you want and it will open up for you and you can print it when it's done loading. This should be easy for you too.

I tried to give you things that are user friendly for someone with your skills. Don't give up most of all. Keep practicing and you will get better in no time at all.

Good luck

You can go to your local Genealogical Society and get the forms, or you can go to www.genealogy.com and sign up for free to get your forms. Good luck.

There is a form that will go back six generations. It is called a Pedigree Chart. So if you had 17 of these you would have 12 generations back. Of course, that will take some time to fill out.

Most of us use a standard 4-generation pedigree chart, with a note on the 8 people at the far right "See chart 2a, 2b, 2c . . .". At the bottom of chart 2a is a note, "Person #1 here is person # 8 on chart #1".

You can tape them together or put them in a binder.

There are commecial services that will print charts up to 4 feet wide and 100 feet long. You send them a GEDCOM file. Write if you'd like the link to one of them.

There are several genealogy programs to help beginners. If you collect the information, they have the capacity to print out many different versions of a family tree. I use one called Family Tree Maker and it is extremely easy to use. Go to any store that sells computer software. They will probably sell or, if not, can order it for you. There is no where you can go to find the information already collected. You must do it yourself but it's very easy to do. Happy hunting.
