This page on the Ancestry site is exactly what you asked for:

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/defa...

You shouldn't have asked that, though. The only way to tell where YOU and YOUR ancestors came from is to trace them. Lots of German "Mueller" became English "Miller" after they got to the USA, for instance. I expect they did the same in Australia.

Huguenots married Cherokees, Dutch married English, Greeks married Italians.

GENEALOGY.COM
THERE ARE ALL KIND OF SIGHTS TO SEARCH UNDER THIS HEADING.

Ancestry.Com has origin and meanings of surnames, not all of them. Also, the origins are based on iimmigrants to the U. S. You usually will find any one name, immigrants came from various countries. Also when you look at the New York passenger lists 1820-1957, any one name has several ethnicities given.

The best thing to do is to trace your ancestry starting with yourself and working back. Anytime you wish to do this, there are lots of good people on this board that can give you some great tips and advice. Just ask.

I have been using this site for years.

Or you can try

http://www.rootsweb.com/
its a free site provided by Ancestry but I'm not sure if that feature is available.
