Position:Home>Genealogy> FAMILY TREE> do you know any FREE online family tree making? thanks so much!?

Question:Geni is one of the sites that will let you post a family tree online without cost. Once you add someone to the tree, you invite them to join Geni and add to your tree. You can block the site so only invited family members can see family information. There isn't any way to upload a lot of information at one time: you have to enter each person individually. It's good if you're just starting and need to get information from geographically distant family members.

If you think you're going to really get into this genealogy thing, then download a genealogy application, like Personal Ancestral File (free) or RootsMagic (about 30US). Both are excellent for beginners.

I have one on here as well as ancestory.com which i paid for but the Tribal pages are free.

*sigh*
You do not need to 'make' your family tree on any site, free or otherwise. You do not HAVE to have a computer to research your ancestry. People have been compiling their family history since before computers were invented, much less the internet. PLEASE do not get sucked in by "we'll do it for you" sites.
Family history involves collecting information as to who your ancestors were. You CAN FIND much of that online, but there is no reason to post what you learn.
Does that mean you can't use the internet to find out how? Of course not. If you go to www.rootsweb.com, there is a guide to beginning research on it's front page. www.cyndislist.com is another free site, listing thousands of sources online that you can find information. www.familysearch.org is another site that offers guidance on how to find ancestors, and a free genealogy program to download.
ANY (and I do mean any) compiled family tree that you find online is nothing more than the research of someone else. It is not a record. The real records are census, birth/death certificates, tombstones, immigration records, the list goes on and on. Much of what you might find is excellent, if the person understands research basics, and has a good record to back up what they post. Many online files are not good.. because the person confuses research, with looking up what someone else has done.
Start with one of the guides to research. I started with a book from the library, but you can find tutorials on the internet. The beginning part of research has to do with yourself, your parents, grandparents, all of whom may be living, and should not be found online. Once you 'hit' where you are looking for dead relatives, then the internet HELPS find that info. It might be online.. or it might involve you actually driving to a cemetery to look at the tombstone yourself, or sending away for a document.
If you start out by understanding how it is done.. then, when you DO find information online, you are able to say if it is of value or not. If you expect that someone else has already done the work, then you understand why some sites make a business of selling access to it.

Online sites are sucky. Simple Family Tree is a tiny freeware program that you can copy in a diskette so you can pass it around or email to other relatives to fill. It might be good for keeping records of their real names, birthdays and phone numbers.

To make it portable, Install the file, then copy only the .exe file (from c:\program files\simple family tree\) to a folder you like. Then uninstall.
