Question:Child born out of wedlock has the surname of her mother on her first birth certificate. Mother then marries and child's surname is changed onto a second birth certificate. Marriage has now come to an end and mother wants her child to have the same surname as her maiden name.

Can this be done? Is there any cost involved?

You don't say whether you are in the UK or not.

In the UK the only way a childs birth certificate can be changed is by adoption.

You can have a change of name deed, done by a solicitor, but this will not change the birth certificate, and costs around £50.

Don't forget that even though there may be bad feeling towards ex husband, when the child grows up they will still find out about the original birth cert, and the second one. It may come as a great shock to them.

I would seriously think things through, and just be honest with your child when they are older.

yes it can be done.. you can change your name as many times as you want and call yourself whatever you want.. there is normally a charge for this but it depends on personal circumstances.. maybe speak to a legal advisor

hi. my boyfriend had the same done to him when he was younger. why do you wish to change his name just because you and his father fell out. hardly fair is it? you can change name as much as you want.

You can change the child's name by deed poll. There is a fee involved though, maybe about £70.

that's wrong me and my x split before my son was born. my x is his dad so my son carrys his name aint that the way it is suposed to be. think the mom is doing it to spite the father. what happened to the world a child should carry it fathers name. call me old fashioned

Two birth certificates was the child adopted by the husband? I cant see why you would have two certificates for one child.?
