Can someone tell me where to find free obituary look ups online?

Question:My mom died when I was 16, and I was thinking about it, and realized in the days after her funeral I was so confused and alone that I don't think I ever read her obituary. I would like to try and find it but I don't want to pay all that money for one look up. Is there anywhere I can find one? Any serious help would be much appreciated!! Thank you.

uhh, the NY lady may be pleasantly surprised to find how many obits are online, not to mention other genealogy resources. Others that expect it.. might be surprised to know that not all of them are.
The critical question is... when and where? I assume you are familiar with which newspaper is the likely one, and able to check if they now have a website. Even if the obit itself is older (ie rotated off), they can get a copy for you.
Or.. the mortuary will probably have a copy as well, since they are the ones responsible for submitting it to the paper.
Another option is use google and type <name of county> genweb. This will probably bring up the website for the appropriate county (common county names can be in more than one state). My favorite genweb page will have obit collections posted. Since the site is run by volunteers, it varies as to what they will actually have.

Go to the public library in the city where you live and ask a librarian to help you find the obituary for your mother, in your local newspaper. Did you ask your relatives for a copy of the obitiuary, if not, start with your family.

It probably depends on how long ago it was. Some newspapers have online archives you can search and you may or may not have to pay for it (for example, to obtain the obit of my great-uncle who died in 2002 from a Florida paper, there's a $2.95 charge). You can also try www.legacy.com. They search a lot of online newspapers, but again it probably depends on how recent it was.

I asked the same question and all i got for answers was ancestory.com, legacy.com and i have already used them and they are so not there no help at all
