This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name Lewis.

Lewis
English (but most common in Wales): from Lowis, Lodovicus, a Norman personal name composed of the Germanic elements hlod ‘fame’ + wig ‘war’. This was the name of the founder of the Frankish dynasty, recorded in Latin chronicles as Ludovicus and Chlodovechus (the latter form becoming Old French Clovis, Clouis, Louis, the former developing into German Ludwig). The name was popular throughout France in the Middle Ages and was introduced to England by the Normans. In Wales it became inextricably confused with 2.
Welsh: from an Anglicized form of the personal name Llywelyn (see Llewellyn).
Irish and Scottish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Lughaidh ‘son of Lughaidh’. This is one of the most common Old Irish personal names. It is derived from Lugh ‘brightness’, which was the name of a Celtic god.
Americanized form of any of various like-sounding Jewish surnames.

Hope this helps.

Most of the answers in this category are sound. Most of us cite sources. You received at least three sound, polite answers that said it had several sources. There isn't a single clear answer here because there isn't a single clear answer in the world.

If you think that one day in 1255 "John the Loud" got tired of being called that, sat down, told everyone "My name is Lewis!" and everyone named Lewis descends from him, you have been misled.

In addition to the English, Scots, Welsh and Jewish already mentioned, "Louis" looks like "Lewis" to an English speaker, although the French pronounce it "Loo-ey". I'd be willing to bet large sums at long odds that at lease one person named "Lewis" in the USA today descends from a Louis whose descendants didn't spell properly.

There are not accurate, black and white answers to some questions. The mists of time blur what happened.

All good answers above. I understand a large portion of people named Lewis in the U. S. (and it is a very common name), their name derives from the Welsh Llewellen or the French Huguenot Louis.

My maternal grandmother was a Lewis. The family was in NC and then after the Civil War they decided to go to California. Was in Missouri for a few years. Changed their mind and came to Texas. Originally in Washington County, Texas. A couple of brothers went to Milam County and my ggrandfather went to Travis County.
