My most bizarre story is a war time one. My mum and uncle Eric were sent to the air raid shelter because they were the youngest and obviously terrified. They had just got into the shelter and mum settled Eric on the bench holding his hand to comfort him, there was a direct hit on the shelter, a door blew off covering my mum and saving her life Eric died instantly along with 33 other people including an infant boy of 18 months old. Eric was nearly 10 when he died.
The bodies were taken to the closest undertaker where they were sorted into adults and children. There were 7 girls of various ages killed that night and just 2 males Eric and the little boy under 10. The rest were adults.
Eric's funeral was arranged and the little boy was to be interred on the same day about six miles away from the cemetery where Eric was due to be buried. Eric's coffin was taken to the house the day before, and because he had been blown up there was no veiwing of his body. It was noted that the coffin looked really small for a 9 year old boy, the undertaker said that was due to his injuries ?. The funeral was held and Eric was interred with his mum my gran. The other little boy's funeral was held he was buried in a family plot but he was the first burial in it. The fact that Eric's coffin was so small still puzzled everyone.
Then some months later they had a visit from some one senior in the council office that runs the cemetery department. He reminded my grandad that he had voiced his opinion at the time about the size of the coffin, grandad said he remained convinced that he had held a funeral nine months ago for the wrong child.
The official had called at the house to tell grandad that they believed that he had got the wrong body and it was believed to be the little boy killed on the same night that had been buried with my gran. It had come to light because some one else had died that was related to the other boy and was being interred in the same grave that the little boy should have been in. His family had been pestering the authorities to exhume the coffin and check, they were that sure they too had the wrong body for burial. Both boys were exhumed at 1 am in February 1942 the graves were under a tent, and my other uncle identified Eric, not by the size of his remains but by the chipped tooth he had at the front of his mouth.
There was a vicar on hand to say prayers and Eric was finally laid to rest with my gran, his mum, and the other little boy had his grandad buried with him later that same day.

wow. how happy that mother must be! well i was looking for my long lost uncle.went online and found out he lived the next street over. there was a girl and guy who had my last name in HS. come to find out they where my uncles kids. it was amazing!!

My great, great grandfather's name is Christopher Columbus. He fought in the Civil War -- on the losing side. I have an old picture and his army papers.

This isn't really a bizarre story, but it gave me chills.
My interest in genealogy started when my mother gave me a very old family bible that had been given to her by her aunt. The bible listed the names and birth dates of William and Sarah Foster and their children. William was called Mill Creek Billy as William was a popular name in the Foster family and they used nicknames to distinguish one from another. We knew from things my grand-father had told us that we were descended from him. We had no idea which child we were descended from. 11 children in the family, 7 girls and 4 boys. I knew that we had to be descended from one of the boys because my great-grandmother was Annie Caldwell Foster who had married Durham Lee Thorne. I started my research and finally was able to take it back to William and Sarah's son Moses. I had proven sources that Moses was the father of Gabriel who was the father of Annie. Still, one of the female children called to me - it was almost like she was haunting me. Her name was Delilah and I felt very drawn to her. I knew that she wasn't the one, but just felt a very special connection to her.

As my research continued, I found that Gabriel Foster, father of Annie, had married Susan Wingo. As I took the Wingo line back, I found that Susan had been the child of Ransom Wingo and Mary Leister. Ransom Wingo had been the son of Burrell Wingo and Delilah Foster!!!!

So, it turned out that Delilah was my 4th great-grandmother. Moses was my 3rd great-grandfather. Delilah was calling to me for a reason.

You think that is odd well when I and my 2 sisters started our genealogy searching I Have found out thatThe woman we called Grandmother for 83 years was an Aunt the Grandfather we Called Granpa for 84 years was no relation to our mother. On Place Granma is listed as Spouse to a 2 year old child another she is listed as Brother In Law another she is not even listed But then my Mother Is listed to a Daughter to an Alice Irwin and George Ochs then Mom was born in 1929 but listed on 1930 censusas being 2 years old. But Grandpa Wust was from Missouri and He married Edith in 1930 in Missouri Mom is Listed as a Larsen with Edith a Hansen Under Charles her Step Father went to School as an Irwin we were told for 69 years she was a Wust. But come to Find out she was never adopted by him. So now Our parents and Grandparents are all gone and most of the older relative who could clear this up But one of moms Brothers tells us to Leave it alone That we Need not Know any more then that is Granpa and Granma. I told him I can go tthe Cemetery where Mom is Buried and Look at her grave and Feel Nothing I fell More Going to my husbands family graves then I do My own Parents. My mother Hated me All my life would call me all sorts of Names she had an Abortion Done on me whaen I was Engaged to be Married at 16 years old I went in to have a Hysterectomy at 32 and the Doctor asked how many times I had been Pregant I said 3 I had a Miscarriage at 16 one at 19 and 1 Live birth at 21 when he got the Pathology report He said when was your abortion I said UH No I do not Believe In them Never Had one He said UH Yes I should know I am a Doctor who does them when a Medical reason calls for them and He said on reports there was sings in there showing I had one Done. I went to my mothers grave and It was so cold the weather was 90 Degrees that day But I was So cold It felt Like it was 20 Degrees outside I called 3 of my sisters and found out Mom had got Rid of my Baby because She Though It might Have Belonged toour Dad who had molested all the Girls in my family he had Raped myone sister 4 times another one 3 times. And had tried to rape me but I kicked him between the leggs. All these years Parents I thought I knew now it comes out my Grandparents aren't even family, My Aunts and Uncles are no relation and My Father is a Known Child Molester, And My Moms Step dad even had Sex with His Daughters. And come to find out even My birth Certificate is a LIE. My oldest Sister is really my mother My nephew is My Brother, and My Baby sister was still born. The woman who raised me Hated me so Bad told Me I should had died When she done the ASalt water Abortion On me But I could Not even get Dying Right. Then I had Spinal Meningitus was in the Hospitals 3 weeks and She told me I should Have died Then But I lived But all My life my oldest sister has done so much for me. It is just so stupid all that I am finding out these days.

Well my aunt married her daughters father- in- law, My ex husband married his grandsons mother and they had a baby.
My grandfather married and had a daughter, the baby died, and we can't find the name of the mother and the baby. (it's like they never existed) And I have so many double cousins due to the intermarrying in our family that I am my own cousin. This making both my ex husbands my cousins and my daughter being my cousin, and my aunt. My parents and grandparents are also my cousins, they are cousins to each other (of course they didn't know this till I started doing genealogy) It kind of turns my stomach.
